Late bar Thursday to Saturday open until 2am
The Cellar bar is really a tale of two venues, the ground level main bar and the downstairs music venue.
The main bar which is usually quite busy is well known for its food and has a reputation for good value and good portion sizes. The presence of large numbers of students at lunch time proves this. The menu covers most appetites from big meals to snacks and sandwiches and everthing is done well. The bar itself is quite plush with leather upholstered seats and polished wood floors. Large windows look out onto Eglington street and Brown Thomas. At night the main bar plays host to a wide range of music such as the Wednesday open mic night hosted by the NUI Music Society which is always popular. Dj competitions, cover bands and singer songwriters can all be heard here most weeks and its worth dropping in during the day to check out whats happening at night. Going back to the 1970's the Cellar was a hotbed of music with Irish artists such as Frankie Gavin and Mickey Finn playing here.
The Jazz Club at the Cellar Underground
Downstairs the 200 capacity venue also plays host to a variety of events with the highlight of the moment being Saturday nights when a collective of local DJ's such as 091, SISI and the Disconauts bring underground electronica to Galway. Check out sisi.tv to get a taste of what its all about. Downstairs on Sunday nights is Subteranean , a showcase for local bands with original works and is definately worth checking out.
